The Office of Fair housing and Equal Opportunity is a division of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban development. FHEO is responsible for enforcing and administering federal fair housing laws, creating policies to make sure that all Americans have fair access to the housing they choose, and setting guidelines that ensure all persons who live in housing are treated fairly by the owners.
According to the federal housing administration, there are three basic components to equal housing. One is that all people are treated the same by the owners of the homes. Another is that people who can afford to pay for the home should be able to afford it as well.

This law was designed to encourage discrimination in housing because of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, and citizenship status. Some of these laws are still in effect today, while others were ruled invalid because of previous violations.
